Partnership between rural Western Wisconsin and rural Kazakhstan continues to grow.
Gary Kirking is a dedicated citizen diplomat volunteer with World Services. Since joining with us to host a USAID Kazakhstan Community Connections delegation in 2008, Gary's leadership has put Western Wisconsin on the map for many citizens in rural Kazakhstan. Through the Open World program, Gary has now managed four Open World delegations from Kazakhstan in rural Western Wisconsin and established strong relationships with those Open World alumni.
The Open World and World Services collaboration has resulted in opportunities for Kirking to visit Kazakhstan to assist on the establishment of Rural Business Centers. Consequently, he was invited to Uzbekistan to present at an International conference on Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
During the Christmas holiday, the Kirking family in Sparta, Wis. shared their family festivities with UW Madison Fulbright Scholar, Mansur Amonav and his son, Obid who were delighted to explore Western Wisconsin.
Mansur appreciated sharing the Kirking family event, “We have a similar large family gathering back in Uzbekistan and Obid and I felt that we were sitting with our extended family back home.”
Citizen diplomat volunteers in Juneau County, who have hosted several of the Open World delegations, are planning a retreat for other Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan international students at UW Madison.
