A cooperative project between La Crosse and the Student Polyclinic in Kharkiv, Ukraine
Goal: To develop a freshmen lifestyle education course to help college students adjust to university life in Kharkiv, Ukraine and to develop a University Counseling Center for the student population in Kharkiv, Ukraine (Approximately 60 higher education educational facilities exist in this city.)
Major achievements: An initial assessment was conducted in August, 2000 to ascertain priorities as viewed by university students. The priorities of sexually transmitted diseases (STD), stress management, nutrition, and gastrointestinal problems were identified as student priorities. A university healthy lifestyle course curriculum including HIV/AIDs education, STD prevention, stress management techniques, nutrition education, smoking cessation, health promotion and self-care is being developed for Kharkiv Aerospace University. In 2002 a new Student Counseling Center was opened and staff was trained in the U.S. based on our model centers.
Impact: Reduction of HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Disease cases in the Kharkiv University student population is critical to its promising future. Baseline data will assist in showing an impact of these educational efforts. In addition, students will be assisted with university adjustment problems and emotional problems that interfere with their ability to successfully engage in university life and education.
