Sandra McCormick of World Services of La Crosse, Inc. participated in the TIME Global Health Summit in New York City November 1-5, 2005. TIME magazine invited 350 policy makers, religious, civic and business leaders, thinkers and doers, visionaries and virologists, scientists, artists, journalists and public health officials to a three day meeting to attempt to find solutions for the world-wide health problems of malaria, TB, and HIV/AIDS.
The Summit, supported by TIME, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The Coca Cola Company, United Nations Foundation, Exxon Mobil and the American Red Cross focused on ten questions about the targeted health issues. Participants dialogued with world leaders to discuss potential solutions and to promote coordination of efforts. The summit also addressed the importance of maximizing use of existing resources which could answer questions such as "Why Do 10 Million Children have to die?" and "Funding – Who, How Much, and What For?"
Featured panelists interacted with the participants to identify new approaches. The special guests included President William J. Clinton – 42nd President of the U.S., The Honorable Madeleine
Albright – 64th Secretary of State of the U. S., William H. Gates – Co-founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The Honorable Kofi Annan – Secretary-General of the United Nations, and R.E. "Ted" Turner - Chairman, United Nations Foundation.
